From Dixie Hills on Atlanta’s Westside to Old Fourth Ward on the eastside and down to the southern suburbs, housing built from former shipping containers has been popping up around the city for well over a decade.
But still, the construction type remains rare.
The latest house of stacked, retired steel containers to blip the radar is taking shape right now in Edgewood. The project aims to create a unique design (hello, exterior spiral staircase) with plentiful space—and a price tag to match.
Counting five bedrooms and five and ½ bathrooms in 3,200 square feet, the three-story dwelling has recently topped out on a former vacant lot at 240 Patterson Avenue, just south of Memorial Drive and a few blocks east of Moreland Avenue.
It listed in mid-June for $1.2 million with Maximum One Realty of Greater Atlanta—for a potential breakdown of $375 per square foot.
That makes it the priciest home listing in Edgewood at the moment by $250,000. And achieving that asking price would smash the neighborhood’s single-family sales record, according to listing services.
The current record holder in Edgewood is a 2009 contemporary residence on Mayson Avenue—one of eastside Atlanta’s first truly modern houses this century—that closed for an even $1 million in May, or $100,000 over the asking price.
That home has fewer bedrooms and bathrooms than the container-built listing but is more than 1,000 square feet larger.
Versus traditional housing, container homes are more durable, eco-conscious, and in some cases relatively affordable, proponents say.
This one is marketed as “luxurious” with its four balconies, windows described as oversized, and in-law suite off the two-car garage. The lights, thermostat, alarm system, garage door, and even doorbells qualify as smart technology, per the listing.
Records indicate the lot itself traded for $85,000 in early 2021.
