A stacked residential project is moving forward in Union City that officials say will help meet a surging demand for housing as Atlanta’s south metro population grows.
South Carolina-based Woodfield Development is planning a groundbreaking ceremony today for a 295-unit project called Union Green, set to rise along Stonewall Tell Road southwest of downtown Atlanta, near the junction of Interstate 285 and I-85.
Expect four-story multifamily buildings with a pool and surface parking, replacing what had been wooded acreage.
The project site is about eight miles due west of Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. City officials also note quick access—via South Fulton Parkway, an east-west thoroughfare next to the apartment site—to headquarters for Porsche North America, Delta Air Lines, and Chick-fil-A. Camp Creek Marketplace’s Target, Publix, and Starbucks were also noted as nearby perks in a project announcement.
Elsewhere in Atlanta, Woodfield recently built downtown’s 16-story 505 Courtland apartment building. The company is also behind plans in Oakland City to develop a multi-building mix of commercial and residential spaces overlooking the BeltLine’s Westside Trail.
Despite its location, Union City hasn’t attracted the level of residential development in nearby Hapeville, or in more far-flung southwest suburbs such as Peachtree City and Newnan. According to Union City’s mayor, Vince R. Williams, who is scheduled to speak at Union Green’s groundbreaking, that’s changing as metro Atlanta’s “job market continues to thrive” in the southern reaches of Fulton County.
“We’ve seen a huge demand for housing here in Union City due to our convenient location and availability to the [Atlanta airport] and several job corridors,” Williams said in the project announcement. “This multifamily residential complex is exactly what we need.”
According to Woodfield, Union Green is scheduled to finish construction within two years, opening in April 2025.
