Westside Future Fund’s first ground-up new development is a go

A communal nonprofit pushing for equitable redevelopment of Westside Atlanta neighborhoods is set to move forward on its first ground-up new project. 

Westside Future Fund has scheduled a “milestone groundbreaking” on Monday for a two-part multifamily project that will rise from “formerly blighted and vacant land” without spurring displacement in Vine City, officials announced today. 

Plans call for two residential structures with 18 total units to be built at 280 James P. Brawley Boulevard NW. The site is across the street from John F. Kennedy Park and the Hollis Innovation Academy, roughly two blocks west of Rodney Cook Sr. Park.  

According to building permit filings, the project calls for two buildings standing three stories each, with one housing 12 units and the other six. A 13-space parking lot will be shared by tenants of both building, per filings. 

The $6.7-million project is “designed to expand housing opportunities within a highly connected part of the neighborhood,” according to a Westside Future Fund summary. We’ve asked for project renderings or other visuals, but a rep says those won’t be shared until after Monday’s ceremony. 

The housing is described as “high-quality, affordable homes” but specific rents haven’t been specified. 

A few blocks north on the same street, Westside Future Fund is also behind the mixed-use renovation of English Avenue’s landmark Yellow Store property. 

The organization also led development of two English Avenue projects with throwback designs that brought nearly 60 new homes to the neighborhood earlier this year.  

Westside Future Fund focuses on “holistic and equitable neighborhood restoration” in English Avenue, Vine City, Ashview Heights, Atlanta University Center, and Just Us, per the agency.
