Not only is Atlanta the best place to live in the U.S. (according to the fine folks at Money magazine), it’s also an exceptionally good place to visit right now.
That’s according to global company Sixt, a Germany-based mobility services provider, which conducted an analysis that slotted the ATL as the No. 4 overall top-rated U.S. destination for a vacation this spring. The study comes as Spring Break tourism is expected to eclipse 2019 levels this year, with virtually all pandemic restrictions lifted and Americans hankering to hit the open road.
The Savannah Historic District also made Sixt’s cut, spotlighting Georgia and Florida (No. 1 Magic Kingdom; No. 2 Panama City Beach) as the only states with two destinations on the list.
Sixt analysts found that, according to Google Trends data, searches for the term “underrated Spring Break destinations” had recently soared by 850 percent, while “top ten spring break destinations” climbed by 180 percent. Which is where Atlanta comes in.
The methodology that slotted Atlanta in the top 5 was also based on weather, Tripadvisor review score, and Instagram popularity.
Atlanta emerged as the No. 4 “hidden gem to add to your bucket list in 2023” (hidden, really?), while downtown’s Georgia Aquarium stood as the No. 4 most in-demand attraction this spring, sandwiched between the Lincoln Memorial (No. 3) and Asheville’s Biltmore Estate.
According to Sixt’s findings, Atlanta also ranked among the top 5 most Instagrammable spring destinations overall, which could help explain the recent outbreak of ubiquitous selfie sticks on the BeltLine.
Savannah’s Historic District, it should be noted, was the only destination in the top 15 to garner a perfect 5.0 Tripadvisor score.
