A mixed-use corner building that promises to add contemporary pizzaz to the historic storefronts of Edgewood Avenue is beginning to take shape.

Designed by Plexus r+d, the four-story structure has claimed a parking lot at Edgewood Avenue and Boulevard, next to the former Sound Table restaurant and kitty-corner from Church Bar.

The project, led by Atlanta-based The Whitaker Grp, will house the flagship store for retailer A Ma Maniére, which specializes in high-end urban apparel.

Other uses in the 18,400-square-foot building will include restaurant and retail space, with a roof deck spanning about 3,400 square feet, according to building permits.

The more modernistic Boulevard façade is intended to blend with forthcoming development next door, while the Edgewood Avenue frontage better meshes with existing brick buildings.

According to its LinkedIn profile, The Whitaker Grp provides social media content, photography, and ecommerce for A Ma Maniére, The Social Status, A.P.B, and other companies. Its Atlanta team works with associates in Charlotte, Greensboro, Raleigh, and Pittsburgh offices.

A Ma Maniére operates other locations in Harlem, Houston, and Washington, D.C.

We’ve reached out to The Whitaker Grp for details on when the project might finish and exactly what the mix of uses might entail. We’ll post any additional info that comes.

In December, the project’s site work was delayed when a wall partially collapsed at the circa-1911 building next door, where Sound Table had operated for a decade. With that wall now enclosed, the building will soon house a restaurant concept called Edgewood Dynasty from the proprietors of nearby Cake, an Edgewood Avenue dessert bar.

One block south of the Edgewood Avenue project, developer Lucror Resources expects to spend $80 million developing Waldo’s Old Fourth Ward into a mix of hotel rooms, office space, retail, and townhomes.

Project reps told Urbanize Atlanta in March the one-two punch of COVID-19 and the wall collapse next door delayed Waldo’s development timeline, but that construction should resume this year on the underground parking and hotel portion.
