Atlanta’s first permanent food truck destination is officially making way for more mixed-use development in the booming Howell Mill Road corridor.

Atlanta-based commercial real estate and development firm Songy Highroads announced today it has purchased the site that’s housed Atlanta Food Truck Park for nearly a decade, with Healey Weatherholtz Properties partnering in the deal.

The 2.65-acre parcel constitutes the northwest corner of Howell Mill Road’s intersection with Interstate 75, part of Buckhead’s Collier Village section. The food truck park opened on weedy lots there in 2012, consistently hosting up to 15 trucks at once in the years since.

Songy Highroads plans to build more than 200 multifamily units on the site, alongside retail and hospitality uses of some sort. A feasibility study is finished, and work now entails designing the development and tabulating construction pricing, officials said. Architecture firm Cooper Carry is on board to design.

In the meantime, food trucks are expected to continue operating on the site, on a temporary basis, throughout the fall and possibly longer.   

“This might be among the last of Buckhead’s undeveloped mixed-use sites of its size,” Foster Durkee, Songy Highroads’ director of acquisitions, said in today’s announcement. “The area is already extremely high-profile, boasting tremendous energy. From a zoning perspective, it offers an ideal opportunity to blend together new residential and commercial real estate.”

Healey Weatherholtz Properties, an active developer in the Howell Mill corridor for years, already owns the majority of nearby retail properties. Company partner Quill O. Healey II called the acquisition “a major step forward in the evolution of Collier Village and the Upper Westside Community Improvement District” near I-75 and in neighborhoods to the south and west.   

“We’ve been working for 14 years to improve this stretch of Buckhead,” added Healey, “and we’re excited to beautify the area with the first-class residential properties that [Songy Highroads] develops.”
