Hidden in plain sight atop a Piedmont Avenue hill, a storied Bed & Breakfast property from the 1890s has come to market in hopes of becoming—just maybe—some well-to-do Atlantan’s personal residence, with space aplenty for guests.

Called Stonehurst, the sprawling 5,871-square-foot dwelling has stood over the Midtown Garden District since 1896, about two blocks from Piedmont Park, connected to the street by original granite pathways mined from Bellwood Quarry (now the centerpiece of Westside Park). The handsome porch, punctuated with gas lanterns, directly faces a sparkling-glass Midtown skyline nobody could have conceived of 130 years ago.

According to Matthew Doyle, a Compass Realtor and Stonehurst’s listing agent, the 923 Piedmont Avenue property remains the largest residential lot in Midtown, totaling .64 acres. (Not coincidentally, Stonehurst’s $3.35 million asking price is the steepest for any standalone home in Midtown right now.)

"Stonehurst is probably hands down the most special property we've had the honor of representing," Doyle noted in an email.

Stonehurst was built by the Hinman family (see nods to them on interior rooms), who kept the home in their care for more than a century; its latest owners, beginning in 2007, undertook a 17-month renovation to modernize the property while keeping period detailing meticulously intact, such as hand-carved millwork, neoclassical mantles, and original heart-of-pine flooring. Technological advances like EV charging stations and 10 solar panels installed discreetly on a back roof came later.

The result, according to marketing materials, remains “one of the most architecturally significant and well-preserved homes in Atlanta” with dashes of modern convenience.

What’s the most expensive home property in Midtown buy these days, beyond location and sheer size? A main home and carriage house with driveway parking, eight en-suite bedrooms (with heated Carrara marble floors and, yes, heated towel racks), and a 760-square-foot owners suite crowning the property. A variety of porches. One elegant social room after the next. And a kitchen that some could welcome as cozy while others shun it as closed-off.

As a Bed & Breakfast, Stonehurst earned a rare 4-Diamond property rating from AAA and has racked up enough accolades to fill several interiors walls (Southern Living “Top 5 Atlanta Hotels”; US News & World Report’s “Best Hotels in Atlanta”; a Hotels.com Gold Winner; and a BedandBreakfast.com “Top Ten Urban Inn”, to name a few.)

Doyle says it’s possible to keep the property operating as a B&B, but business assets would be sold separately.
