A Chamblee greenspace and stormwater project in the works for a decade is set to officially break ground next month, continuing the city’s efforts to create a more livable and attractive downtown district. 

City of Chamblee leaders have scheduled an Aug. 12 groundbreaking for Fish Bolt Park, a $4.6-million wetland initiative set to take shape at 1900 Chamblee Tucker Road.

The two-mile Chamblee Rail Trail, a multi-use pathway, abuts the southern border of the future park. 

The property in question, tucked between Peachtree Boulevard and the city’s MARTA station, is a former MARTA stormwater detention pond acquired by the City of Chamblee as part of its 2016 trails and parks expansion program.

The future park site is surrounded by infill development including hundreds of new multifamily units and civic buildings in nearby blocks downtown, with more in the pipeline for the growing DeKalb County city of roughly 30,000 residents.

Fish Bolt Park will be considered a “constructed wetland,” or a shallow marsh system that controls runoff and treats urban stormwater, removing pollutants by way of marsh vegetation, according to project engineers Kimley-Horn. 

The project’s scope will also include an elevated observation deck, a nature play area, ADA-accessible pathways, a mural wall, and additional decks with seating, lighting, landscaping, and other features meant to control erosion. 

The bidding process for the park job kicked off last July, when initial plans had called for beginning construction before the end of last year.

The groundbreaking will mark “an exciting milestone as we continue investing in the places that bring our community together,” Chamblee Mayor Brian Mock said in an announcement. “Fish Bolt Park will serve as an asset for our community, providing opportunities to connect, relax, and enjoy the outdoors.” 

Kimley-Horn designed the park space, and contractor Reeves Young, a frequent Beltline collaborator, is on board to build it, per Chamblee city officials. 

Construction schedules call for Fish Bolt Park to be finished and open by summer 2027. Find more context and visuals in the gallery above.
