Numerous studies in recent years have declared the City of Atlanta to be a top landing spot for post-college graduates. But could it be one of the best college towns in America, too?

The answer, according to analysts with personal finance website WalletHub, is a definitive yes.

WalletHub’s new 2026 Best College Towns in America report ranks the ATL at No. 5 when it comes to collegiate experiences, including strong academics, unoppressive cost of living, social environment, and top work opportunities for students.

So what mattered is more than cheap food, dive bars, and tailgating debauchery.

Analysts weighed 31 key metrics for 415 cities and towns across the U.S. for the new list.

Atlanta charted even higher (No. 3) when the list was broken down into large cities for university life (more than 300,000 residents), behind only Austin and Raleigh, respectively.

According to analysts, Atlanta’s strong performance owes much to the city’s “social environment” ranking of No. 3 in the county. But like other large cities, ATL was middle-of-the-pack (No. 238) when it comes to overall “wallet friendliness.”

Factors such as share of part-time jobs, unemployment rates, earning potential for graduates, crime rates, nightlife options and breweries per capita, housing costs, and student loan debt per person were all considered.

“It’s best to live in a city with a reasonable cost of living, along with good academic and work opportunities,” noted a WalletHub summary. “The ideal city should also provide a fun social environment to help students deal with the stress of college.”

Elsewhere in Georgia, eight additional cities made the cut: Athens was ranked No. 27 in the country; Statesboro No. 154; Albany No. 308; Savannah No. 333; Valdosta No. 340; Augusta No. 359; Columbus No. 388; and Macon-Bibb County No. 391.

An earlier WalletHub College and University Rankings 2027 report this month found Atlanta’s Georgia Tech to be the No. 10 school in the country among nearly 740 studied, based on 30 key measures.
