South Downtown opening; Streets Alive coming; new ATL airport eats

DOWNTOWN—The next addition to South Downtown’s growing culinary menu is set for a Wednesday debut. 

Husband-wife team Mike and Shyretha Sheats are scheduled to open their first brick-and-mortar offering, Southern farm-to-table concept Mule Train, on Sept. 30 at South Downtown’s 87 Broad St. (That’s the former Miller’s Rexall Drug Store that once graced the cover of a Paul McCartney album.)

As designed by NO Architecture, the 40-seat, shotgun-style restaurant incorporates walnut wood walls, blue leather and velvet banquettes, direct views to the kitchen, and a bar to anchor the space.

The concept has been a decade in the making and stems from the duo’s The Plate Sale, an acclaimed pop-up, with a goal of centering the “foodways and family gathering traditions of Northeast Georgia, drawing on seasonal ingredients and the resourcefulness that has long shaped the region,” per an announcement. (The name, for those wondering, nods to Chef Mike Sheats’ aunt and uncle’s house, a community gathering spot and stopping point in rural Northeast Georgia.) 

Sheats is a veteran of top restaurants in the Southeast, including metro Atlanta’s Staplehouse and Muss & Turner’s, and his menu is inspired by classic “meat and threes” with dishes such as Candy Roaster Squash with Habanada and Marigold or Aged Pork with Wisteria and Okra. Shyretha Sheats, in place as general manager and beverage director, has curated a drinks list that includes full-size and tasting-size pours of house drinks, classic cocktails, aperitifs, and fortified wines, along with wines and craft beer.

MIDTOWN/DOWNTOWN—With summer temps finally vacating the premises, Atlanta Streets Alive is making its fall comeback from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday on its famed Peachtree Street route, stretching from the heart of downtown (Mitchel Street) up to Midtown (15th Street), with plenty of live music, dancing, booths, food, drink, and general open-streets revelry in between.

Sunday’s program will be the fifth of seven planned Streets Alive events this year that include old-favorite routes and others that were tied to World Cup, as coordinated by the Atlanta Department of Transportation and safe streets advocates Propel ATL. Sunday’s free event will convert the streets to car-free zones for pedestrians and people on bikes, e-scooters, skateboards, and other non-motorized transportation (dogs on leashes are also welcome.) 

To close out the year on Nov. 8, Streets Alive is scheduled to return to Howell Mill Road as a partnership with Westside Stride, which has organized a similar open-streets event for three consecutive years.

AIRPORT—More dining options at the World’s Busiest Airport ® are about to take flight. 

On Tuesday afternoon, Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens is scheduled to host a ribbon-cutting and public opening for three new concepts at Concourse B Centerpoint: Southern Farms Market; Antico Pizza, the homegrown, Michelin-starred pizzeria founded by Giovanni Di Palma; and CAVA, a fast‑casual chain specializing in customizable Mediterranean bowls, salads, pitas, and sides.

Representing a partnership between the airport, the city, and North American travel retail company Paradies Lagardère, the three new dining concepts “represent the latest additions to ATL’s concessions program and reflect the airport’s continued commitment to elevating the passenger experience through fresh, locally inspired offerings and nationally recognized brands,” per an announcement.
