If the threat of horrendous traffic has determined where you live in metro Atlanta, you’re hardly alone.
A new national analysis has found that traffic in Atlanta—more than any other U.S. city—is a major (and stressful) factor in steering where residents choose to put down roots, influencing housing and development patterns.
The study—conducted by California-based The Lemon Law Experts, a firm specializing in consumer goods advocacy involving cars, motorcycles, RVs, and other products—polled more than 2,000 drivers in 40 major cities across the U.S.
The findings suggest ATL traffic isn’t just a time-killing headache.
According to the poll, 41 percent of Atlanta drivers have picked where they lived based on traffic. That’s the highest percentage of any city studied.
Below are three more dubious first-place finishes, um, achieved by Atlanta, per the firm’s analysts:
• 39 percent of Atlantans have moved or considered moving to shorten their commute (No. 1 nationally);
• 86 percent of residents have opted for longer routes to dodge traffic (No. 1);
• Atlanta also ranks No. 1 of the 40 cities for overall driving stress, scoring 99.40 out of 100.
The 2,003 American drivers polled were asked a number of questions, including how traffic compares to years past, how stressful they find driving cars intown, how often it leaves them stressed or anxious, et cetera.
Points were awarded to responses that represented stressful encounters, and scores were averaged by city.
Scores were adjusted on a scale of 0 to 100, with the larger numbers representing the most stress, and Atlanta clunked hard:
