Four years of hype and great expectations culminated in an epic day of 2026 FIFA World Cup revelry (and sorrow) Wednesday in downtown Atlanta, a section of the city physically—and perhaps fundamentally—changed by its largest sporting spectacle since the 1996 Olympic Games.

If you were there, and whether you were pulling for England or Argentina, you probably agree: What a party!

Aside from a brief scuffle resulting in arrests outside State Farm Arena in the afternoon—and England supporters nearly fighting each other at Park Bar much later—the vibes we witnessed throughout downtown Wednesday were legendarily positive.

We compiled this photo essay for the historical record, recapping what we’ll surely all tell the grandkids about one day.

The ITP World Cup party hasn’t wrapped yet, though.

Our pals at Decatur WatchFest ’26 send a reminder that two more days of concerts and big-screen fútbol festivities continue Saturday (5 to 7 p.m.) and Sunday (3 to 5 p.m.). And in celebration of the World Cup’s Final match, Showcase Atlanta is hosting a full day of free festivities Sunday (11 a.m. to 8 p.m.) in Piedmont Park, headlined by an hourlong Ludacris concert at 6 p.m., after the game.

But no place has shined throughout this “historic summer,” in Showcase Atlanta’s words, like downtown, from Broad Street to Peachtree and every square foot of Centennial Olympic Park.

More on this soon, but for now find a photo-essay celebration of downtown Atlanta’s World Cup grand finale in the gallery above. What a day—and night—for this city.
