An England supporter critical of Atlanta’s “sketchy” downtown and “Walking Dead vibes” aside, the city has generally scored high marks during the first weeks of 2026 FIFA World Cup, with more than two full weeks to go.

Nonetheless, the Atlanta Mayor’s Office is pushing a simple message during this heat-wave week, aimed at fans from Great Britain, the Democratic Republic of Congo, the wilds of Lilburn, or anywhere else:

“Come early. Support local. Explore Downtown. Experience Atlanta.”

In blocks beyond the record-breaking FIFA Fan Fest at Centennial Olympic Park, local restaurants, businesses, and public gathering spaces are positioning themselves as lively match-day destinations around downtown, with American-sized viewing screens, expanded seating (and hours), and bountiful food and drink.

Destinations getting less publicity than Fan Fest right now, as city officials point out, include the following:

  • The area on and around the Steele/Nelson Street pedestrian bridge at Centennial Yards, where temporary vendors operate;
  • Underground Atlanta continues to host match-day activations and other fútbol-related activities, as partially backed by public funding;
  • In addition to instant-hit El Tesoro, South Downtown watering holes and eateries now include Brewhouse Café and Broad Street BBQ, in addition to Glide Pizza, Bottle Rocket, and other offerings;
  • Global Grub Alley is turning Walton Street into a pedestrian-only corridor for 15 days during World Cup. Per city officials, up to 20 Atlanta-area trucks are lining a two-block stretch from Centennial Olympic Park Drive to Fairlie Street;
  • Showcase Atlanta has partnered with Butter.ATL for Capture the Flag—where visitors can earn prizes while exploring Atlanta, per the city;
  • The Welcome to ATL Experience, a vendor activation with 150 local businesses, is open on match days in Atlanta—and the day after;
  • The ATL Cultural Exchange at The CTR will be open through July 15 and will also feature Showcase Atlanta vendors during its run.

Last but not least, the free fútbol festival planned at Piedmont Park on July 19—A Celebration of Sound & Soccer—will close out ATL’s summer of soccer.

Expect a full free set from Atlanta’s own Ludacris, alongside other local acts in a festival produced by ONE Musicfest, according to city officials. RSVP is required.
