One of Atlanta’s most cherished old commercial district’s core is basically a blank palette now, with fresh infrastructure and much more versatility (and visibility) than before.

An official ribbon-cutting is scheduled this afternoon for Little Five Points’ new Findley Plaza, a centralized, communal gathering place near the intersection of the district’s many streets.

Following a decade of planning and fundraising by Little 5 Points Alliance, the $830,000 project broke ground in August where Euclid and Moreland avenues meet. (Per that group, $458,000 of the budget was supplied from Renew Atlanta funding.)

The remade plaza includes more than 13,000 square feet of new impervious surfaces, pedestrian furniture, new sidewalks, electricity for programming, and ADA-accessible ramps, per designs approved by the City of Atlanta and Urban Design Commission more than six years ago.

According to Lauren Welsh, Little 5 Points Alliance executive director, the former “old scraggly crepe myrtle [trees]” in the middle of the plaza have been replaced by large new oaks that act as a buffer for pedestrians around the project’s rim.

“And yes,” wrote Welsh via email, “we have 10 new bike racks!”

Plans call for a large L5P sculpture by Atlanta artist R.Land—known for his “Pray for ATL” hands and colorful, zany murals—to be installed today.

“The goal of the newly redesigned Findley Plaza is to create a flexible, community driven space that is welcoming to all,” the alliance wrote in 2021. Russell Landscape, Lichty Commercial Construction, and the city’s Department of Transportation are partners in the project.
