In news that could bode well for Atlanta’s burgeoning tech industry, the Big Peach has been ranked among the smartest cities in the U.S. when it comes to internet capabilities, green infrastructure, and other factors, according to a new analysis.
ProptechOS, a Stockholm-based real estate technology company, ranked Atlanta fifth among smart cities across America, between tech mecca San Francisco and Washington, D.C., respectively.
Austin took the top spot, narrowly edging Los Angeles on a 100-point scoring system that aimed to determine the U.S. cities best prepared for “a smart future.”
ProptechOS analyzed the 100 most populous cities in the U.S. and Europe to grade those most well-suited for emerging technologies. The methodology looked at 11 smart-city indicators, including broadband download speeds, number of free WiFi hotspots and 5G towers, access to electric vehicle charging points, availability of airports, and number of tech jobs, among other factors, per the company.
Atlanta’s 72.5 score out of 100 was good for top five in the U.S., with green infrastructure being a local highpoint, according to ProptechOS.
The ATL scored particularly well for having the fourth highest number of “Internet of Things” companies per 100,000 people.
Georgia’s capital also has the fifth highest number of EV charging stations in the country (thanks, new apartment complexes), according to ProptechOS’s findings. That’s in line with an unrelated 2021 study that found Atlanta to be the sixth best place for owning an EV in the U.S.
Atlanta also performed well in ProptechOS’s analysis when it came to the number of green-certified buildings, ranking 10th highest in the U.S.
Looking at green infrastructure metrics alone—public access to EV charging stations, the number of those stations per 10,000 people, and the sheer amount of green buildings—Atlanta stacked up (surprisingly) well on an international basis:
