Atlanta’s tallest building proposal in decades continues to make strides toward becoming a reality.
City of Atlanta Office of Buildings staff approved land development permits this week allowing Rockefeller Group’s 1072 West Peachtree project to move forward with the redevelopment of a now-vacant U.S. Post Office facility at the corner of 12th Street.
Coincidentally or not, a promotional website for the 60-story skyscraper has just launched, lending a fresh perspective on how the project would fit among Midtown’s recent vertical growth—and dwarf what’s come to colloquially be known as the Google building across the street.
According to permitting paperwork, Rockefeller has been granted permission to move forward with grading and installing new utilities, curb cuts, streetscape, and sidewalks at the 1.14-acre site where the mixed-use high-rise is planned.

The website indicates the building will rise 60 stories (as opposed to 61 in initial plans), with designs of “monumental distinction” creating a place “that is as much active as it is restful, sophisticated as it is welcoming, and connected as it is set apart.”
1072 West Peachtree is promoted as Atlanta’s most amenitized office tower, with a “sky garden” described as Midtown’s biggest outdoor deck. Amenities will include a luxury spa, concierge, valet, and smart building tech alongside “next-gen mechanical systems,” per the site.

Manhattan-based Rockefeller bought the USPS site for $25 million in 2020. The company’s plans to erect Atlanta’s first true skyscraper in years came to light in November 2021, when the project was vetted and later green-lighted by the Midtown Development Review Committee.
Set on the southwest corner of West Peachtree and 12th streets, the project’s height would reshape Midtown’s skyline, especially when viewed from the west.
As designed by architecture firms TVS Design and Brock Hudgins, 1072 West Peachtree would include 350 market-rate apartments and 212,000 square feet of offices, according to project filings. At the base, roughly 6,600 square feet of retail is planned along West Peachtree Street. An eight-story parking deck with some 850 spaces would be fully screened with translucent glass, project leaders have said.
In February last year, the Midtown post office closed and moved its operations to Selig’s 1065 Peachtree Street building, setting the stage for demolition and redevelopment. (Rockefeller partnered with Selig on the 40 West 12th condos, which opened in 2021 a block from the former post office).

Early indications were that Rockefeller’s tower would climb more than 730 feet—making it Atlanta’s fifth tallest high-rise, if that tally remains accurate.
