A stone’s throw from Atlanta’s largest designated greenspace, Grove Park is expected to soon welcome one of the Westside neighborhood’s first new multifamily projects in decades.
Developed by Columbia Residential, the 110-unit project is called Columbia Canopy at Grove Park, and it’s finishing construction just south of Westside Park’s $44-million first phase that debuted in August.
Apartments ranging from one to three-bedrooms are scheduled to deliver this winter (earlier estimates said December) and to permanently remain available at rents considered affordable.
According to the Grove Park Foundation, a partner in the project, housing officials are "working to prepare residents and families (through the N.O.W. Program) in Grove Park and in the greater Westside community to be rent-ready and eligible to take advantage of new rental opportunities" in the forthcoming Canopy community and others.
The Columbia Residential project is "aimed toward providing housing for [people] at risk of displacement in this area that is seeing rapid investment and accompanying acceleration of housing prices,” the foundation notes.
We’ve reached out to property management for info on the range of rents, and when exactly apartments will be ready, and we’ll update this story with any further details that come.
The Canopy project consists of four buildings situated around a circular dive. Home sizes will range from 708 square feet (one bedroom, one bathroom) to 1,360 square feet (three bedrooms, two bathrooms).
The location is a few blocks west of the Bankhead MARTA station, just south of Donald Lee Hollowell Parkway.
Columbia, an Atlanta-based affordable housing developer, currently has eight projects in the pipeline, including the final multifamily component at the mixed-use, transit-oriented redo of the Edgewood/Candler Park MARTA station.
Other partners in the Grove Park project include JHP Architecture & Urban Design and Long Engineering.
It’s not the only affordable-housing initiative moving forward near scenic Westside Park, which has already proven a popular destination for recreation, exercise, and events such as a music festival last weekend.
Just north of the Columbia project, developers Urban Oasis Catalyst are planning 65 housing units of various types—about half of them deemed affordable, workforce housing—across 12 acres of mostly undeveloped land, spread across three Westside neighborhoods.
