What’s been called English Avenue’s largest private investment in generations is expected to start coming together in a more noticeable way, according to developers Lincoln Property Company.
About $17 million worth of infrastructure work began six months ago at Echo Street West, a 19-acre Westside redevelopment that could eventually bring more mixed-use space than Ponce City Market near the junction of Northside Drive and Donald Lee Hollowell Parkway.
An adaptive-reuse event space called Guardian Works—a reworked brick-and-beam building from 1908—is taking reservations on site now. And officials say the first large component, a four-story office mid-rise, is prepared to start vertical construction in June.
Spanning 275,000 square feet, that building is expected to open next summer near the Westside BeltLine Connector trail recently built by the PATH Foundation and BeltLine. Expect 50,000 square feet of “locally driven restaurants and retail” to join the offices, per developers.
Across the next decade or so, the much broader outlook for Echo Street West calls for a village of various uses that echoes the site’s industrial past and becomes a jobs center for Westside neighborhoods. A hotel, apartments, a 16,000-square-foot space for artists and makers, many more offices and retail slots, and 3.4 acres of outdoor entertainment space are all in the works.
